Standard Coltrane showcases the saxophonist at the onset of his career as a leader. It was recorded while he was still working as a sideman with Miles Davis in a sextet that included Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans (this group would record the celebrated album Kind of Blue the following year). The quintet on Standard Coltrane features flugelhorn player Wilbur Harden (mentioned as Wilbur Hardin on the original back cover), plus the rhythm section from Miles Davis’ quintet, which was composed of pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. As the title indicates, the material for the LP consists mostly of well-known standards, and no original compositions by Coltrane are heard here. The July 11, 1958 session was quite long, and some of the material produced that day would also appear later on the albums Stardust and Bahia. This session marked Coltrane’s final date with Harden. They had previously collaborated on three 1958 sessions for the Savoy label, which were issued on the albums Ma-instream 1958, Tanganyika Strut, and Jazz Way Out. As the original liner notes clearly state, the material on Standard Coltrane was put on the shelf at the time of the session and issued later, when Coltrane was already an established leader.
